Ricoh Caplio R7 Announced

Ricoh have announced the new 8 megapixel Ricoh Caplio R7 - an update to the unique Ricoh Caplio R6, the new R7 features a wide-angle 7.1x optical zoom lens, ISO upto 1600, image stabilisation, 1cm macro mode, an (ultra) compact metal body, Face Recognition focus, slim body (20.6mm), a 2.7" screen, updated features include Smooth Imaging Engine III, 8.15 megapixel CCD and new brightness and colour-tone functions. The camera will be available in Silver, Black and Orange from September 2007 at £229.99 inc Vat:

"With a new image processing engine and a 7.1x optical wide zoom lens (28–200 mm in 35 mm camera format) mounted on a slim body only 20.6 mm at its thinnest point, the Caplio R7 takes digital photography to an even higher level of image quality."

Ricoh Caplio GX100 Review at Photography BLOG

Photography BLOG have posted their review of the new Ricoh GX100 - a compact 10 megapixel update to the Ricoh Caplio GX8 - it features an ultra-wide angle 3x optical zoom lens equivalent to 24 - 72mm, a 2.5" screen, CCD-shift vibration correction feature, 1cm macro, ISO upto 1600, 380 shot battery life and a removable LCD viewfinder. The Ricoh Caplio GX100 will be available at the end of April for £399:

"There are a few downsides to consider, principally the level of noise at ISO 400 and faster, and depending on how deep your pockets are, the price. Ricoh have always chosen the route of "less reduction, more noise", maintaining image detail but displaying more artifacts at slower ISO speeds than some of their competitors. Consequently images are noisy both onscreen and in prints at ISO 400 and faster. In all other respects the image quality is very good."

"The features list is reasonable including a very impressive 3.7 shot per second continuous shot mode. This is one of the speediest burst modes we've ever seen on a compact and when combined with the 7.1x optical zoom and Ricoh's anti-blur technology, it places a lot of power into the hands of the user. However, you should note that with the anti-blur switched on, we experienced some very mixed results with regards to image quality."

"There is some softness in the corners when using the wide-angle focal lengths, but this is forgivable given the versatile range that the 7x lens offers. The Vibration Correction system is very effective, and in conjunction with the useable ISO range of 64-400, this makes the Ricoh R6 well-suited to most photographic situations."
